Chapter Sixteen

Sebastian

As much as I tried not to become flustered at Leah’s words, it was harder to do than I’d assumed. Up until now, almost all of our flirtatious interactions—if you could call them that—had the potential to just be lighthearted fun. There were no stakes in joking about sharing a room or even sharing gossip over lunch at Unlimited Design.

But the club incident, or Leah’s knee pressing into my palm, or her question just now—it all ventured into unambiguously romantic territory. And because I’d decided to take things slow this time around, I had to force myself not to become a puppet on strings every time Leah mentioned or did something suggestive.

Even if she meant it, I knew that falling into bed with her now would be a mistake, and I wasn’t willing to risk the future I saw for us for a one-night stand that would leave the both of us feeling used. And that was why I’d done my best to answer her as neutrally as possible—if Leah wanted this then she would keep up her efforts, and if not, that would show I was simply enjoying her company.

With my back to her, I had a moment of privacy to compose myself, to sink my teeth into the fig and allow its syrupy sour taste to shock me back into reality. My internal fantasies at the church were one thing, but actively expressing my ardor to Leah was another entirely.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in peaceful silence thanks to my brusqueness and, based on how Leah still wove through the lavender fields, it didn’t bother her much. And her acceptance of my mood allowed me to figure out my game plan for the rest of the night.

Of course, we could always go our separate ways for dinner and get back to the hotel whenever it suited us individually. And that way I could inconspicuously avoid even more romantic moments.

But I wasn’t about to abandon Leah like that, especially in a foreign country, so I moved on to considering where we would eat. A fancy restaurant would be too on the nose and another café might bore her—if I was lucky, there’d be some open-air eatery we’d walk by on our way back that I could suggest, something simple yet lively.

And then there was the matter of what we’d do after. Under other circumstances, I’d probably take Leah back to Una Noche de Descanso and make love to her all night. Perhaps I could construct a makeshift desk to set my computer up and answer emails while Leah read in bed? Or we could have an early evening and wake up refreshed tomorrow?

These decisions were my least favorite to make, which is why I had people like Ms. Elmore and James in my life. They were always able to fix my social calendar so I could focus on my job, and without them here I felt lost, especially since I couldn’t foist that task on Leah.

I supposed the safest options were the eatery—if we found one—and the early evening.
